Weekly BLOG #8

This is my 8th blog for the 8th week of school!
That means we are halfway to the end! And then its finals! And the week following is graduation. WOW!
This is unreal. Only because I feel like I've been in school since forever and I can actually see the finish line now. Plus, I went to gradfest [I keep wanting to call it Ozzfest] today and that kind of made me realize all over again that it is just around the corner.
Ahh..!

Anyway, back to blogging about real stuff. Did anyone download those brushes yet? Just wondering since no one commented. Or maybe no one really cares for these blogs except for Joe. And I am taking it way too seriously. They're really cool brushes! I'm not sure how long theyre gona have it there. lol There I go "off" topic again.

OK so. Ever since last semester, when Joe gave us a project relating to The Inconvenient Truth movie, I started to do a lot research about the environment and things that will help save our planet. I've been trying to make the little changes and when I purchase products and other essentials I try to buy things that have less packaging and are environmentally friendly and easy to recycle.

I ran across the GE website today. I have posted the link so you may check it out as well. The site is constructed beautifully. Click on the Smart Grid link. Its fun!

Parts of the site is very informative and interactive which makes it entertaining. I think the people who made this site were genius, because they are using this interaction to feed information into your brain without you even thinking about it. I guess its kind of like brain-washing, but for something positive. lol The rest of the site is very easy to manage. Its not crowded and crammed with pics and information. It is simple and to the point. Just the way I like it.

That's about it. Till next week.
Ciao :]

Software Front Cover

I was thinking of going 2 different directions with this project. One of them was to do the whole "going green feel." This is the first one I have presented. I think it will be a bit too simple, but I was thinking of adding monotone imagery to it as well. I believe we are just designing the front cover so when it is opened thats where the imagery will be. I wanted to use just one color for each program.

PS. The box itself is not going to have this "texture" i am just going to print on recycled paper bag to just get the color. Or should i have the texture?? This is a scanned piece of a wrinkled one just to show the color and feel.

My second one I was thinking of using was the painted one. Each program will have their shade of colors painted in stripes as well. I used blue paint and mixed them with white, black, a tad of yellow and red.

Ok so it looks a little simple. But whats wrong with that? I will def have to fix a little things here and there but so far these are my favorite digitals. They have been going for the simplistic look nowadas anyway.. going green now wouldn't hurt either. :]

Panel Discussion

I have been to 3 other panel discussions before the one I attended last night. I always find myself inspired after I get out of them. But not this time. This time it actually made me realize that after I graduate in May, I will have nothing I have now, especially school and work (I am a student assistant, I cannot work at my office after I graduate). It means I will have to go into the real world and take off my training wheels and THAT scares me. :/

The first one to speak was Dominique Bragg. She graduated in 2007. She gave some good input on how not to work for friends and relatives. It can never be professional and eventually someone is going to get the bad end. She currently works for MTV. She is the graphic design coordinator. And works on banners and other marketing features for the neopets website.

Teressa spoke next. The company she works for is called Neuron Syndicate. She does entertainment design for the DVD packaging. She kind of talked about the harsh reality of working with clients. One point she made clear was that people don't pick things right away. There can be many rounds of comps and then some how come back to the very first idea drawn out.

Max Shustler was the last speaker. It was his fault I kind of feel this way now. He works for Hamagami and Carroll. He does packaging design for video games. He also freelances outside of the studio. He works under 4 supervisors. I learned quite a few things from him, one of which were to aim high when asked about the pay. If you aim low, you will get it. If you aim high, there is room left for negotiation.

A few other things I learned from the Panel Discussion was that it is way easier to work for web than print. Youre never going to use your portfolio, it is only your ticket to get in. Develop a thick skin because people can be rough in the real world. You do not need a fancy website to get your point across.

Software Packaging

I am going to design Adobe Photoshop CS5.

Photoshop is a graphic editing software used by many graphic designers, professional photographers, web designers and video professionals and many more professions. Adobe Photoshop started as a program called Display in 1987. It has come a long way since its debut in 1990, Photoshop 1.0. The software allows users to use their creativity and technology to retouch, manipulate and edit images.
